Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and parts: OBD-II scanner, multimeter, socket set, jumper cables, safety gloves, and safety goggles.
  • Ensure the vehicle is in "Park" (automatic) or "Neutral" (manual) with the parking brake engaged.
2. Inspect and Clean Battery Terminals
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Disconnect the negative (-) terminal first and then the positive (+) terminal using a socket wrench.
    2. Inspect both terminals for corrosion; if present, clean with a mixture of baking soda and water, using a wire brush.
    3. Rinse with water and dry thoroughly.
    4. Reconnect the positive (+) terminal first, followed by the negative (-) terminal, ensuring a tight fit.
3. Jump-Start the Battery
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Position another vehicle with a functioning battery close to the RAV4.
    2. Connect the jumper cables:
      • Positive cable to the positive terminal of the dead battery.
      • Positive cable to the positive terminal of the working battery.
      • Negative cable to the negative terminal of the working battery.
      • Negative cable to an unpainted metal surface on the RAV4 (not on the battery).
    3. Start the working vehicle and let it run for a few minutes.
    4. Attempt to start the RAV4.
4. Replace the Battery (if necessary)
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Once the RAV4 is running, check the battery voltage again; if it does not hold charge, proceed to replace it.
    2. Disconnect the terminals as previously described.
    3. Remove the battery hold-down bracket with a socket set.
    4. Carefully lift the old battery out of the tray.
    5. Place the new battery into the tray and secure it with the hold-down bracket.
    6. Connect the positive (+) terminal first, followed by the negative (-) terminal.
5. Test the New Battery
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Start the vehicle to ensure it runs smoothly.
    2. Use a multimeter to check the voltage while the engine is running (should be between 13.8 to 14.4 volts).
