Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Park the vehicle on a flat surface and ensure the ignition is off.
  • Wear safety glasses and gloves.
2. Lift the Vehicle
  • Use a floor jack to lift the front of the RAV4.
  • Place jack stands under the vehicle’s frame for safety.
3. Inspect the Ball Joints
  • Remove the wheel using a socket set.
  • Inspect the ball joint boot for cracks or tears.
  • Use a pry bar to gently apply pressure to the ball joint; look for excessive movement.
4. Replace Worn Ball Joints
  • Removal:

    1. Remove the cotter pin and castle nut from the ball joint.
    2. Use a ball joint separator or pickle fork to detach the ball joint from the steering knuckle.
    3. If applicable, remove any retaining bolts holding the ball joint to the control arm.
  • Installation:

    1. Position the new ball joint into the control arm.
    2. Secure it with the appropriate bolts and torque them to manufacturer specifications.
    3. Reattach the steering knuckle to the ball joint and secure with the castle nut and cotter pin.
5. Reassemble the Vehicle
  • Reinstall the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle from the jack stands.
  • Torque the lug nuts to manufacturer specifications after the vehicle is back on the ground.
