Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack, jack stands, wheel chocks, lug wrench, caliper, flashlight, and safety glasses.
  • Park the vehicle on a flat surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels to prevent rolling.
2. Remove Wheel
  • Loosen the lug nuts using a lug wrench slightly before raising the vehicle.
  • Use a jack to lift the front or rear of the vehicle (depending on which brake pads you are checking).
  • Secure the vehicle with jack stands.
  • Remove the lug nuts completely and take off the wheel.
3. Inspect Brake Pads
  • Look for the brake caliper, which houses the brake pads.
  • Use a flashlight to inspect the brake pads through the caliper.
  • Measure the pad thickness using a caliper:
    • If pads are less than 3mm thick, they should be replaced.
4. Check Brake Rotors
  • Inspect the surface of the rotors for any signs of damage such as scoring or rust.
  • Use a straight edge to check for warping; there should be no gaps between the rotor and the straight edge.
5. Reassemble
  • Place the wheel back on the hub.
  • Hand-tighten the lug nuts before lowering the vehicle.
  • Remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle.
  • Tighten the lug nuts in a crisscross pattern to the manufacturer’s specified torque (typically around 76 ft-lbs for RAV4).
