Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools: socket set, oil filter wrench, funnel, oil catch pan, and rags.
  • Gather parts: new engine oil (5W-20 or as specified in the owner's manual), new oil filter, and an oil drain plug gasket.
  • Safety warning: Ensure the engine is cool before starting the procedure.
2. Lift the Vehicle
  • Utilize a jack to lift the front of the vehicle.
  • Secure with jack stands to prevent any movement.
  • Ensure the vehicle is on a flat, stable surface.
3. Drain Old Oil
  • Place the oil catch pan under the oil drain plug.
  • Use a socket wrench to loosen and remove the drain plug.
  • Allow the old oil to completely drain into the catch pan.
  • Once drained, reinstall and tighten the drain plug to the specified torque (typically 30 ft-lbs).
4. Replace Oil Filter
  • Locate the oil filter (usually accessible from the top or bottom of the engine).
  • Use an oil filter wrench to remove the old oil filter.
  • Prepare the new oil filter by applying a thin layer of new oil to the rubber gasket.
  • Install the new oil filter, tightening it by hand until snug (do not overtighten).
5. Add New Oil
  • Remove the oil filler cap on the top of the engine.
  • Using a funnel, pour in the new engine oil (typically 4.5 quarts for the RAV4).
  • Replace the oil filler cap securely.
6. Start the Engine
  • Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes.
  • Check for any leaks around the oil filter and drain plug.
  • Turn off the engine and wait a minute for the oil to settle.
7. Check Oil Level
  • Use the dipstick to check the oil level.
  • Add more oil if necessary, ensuring it is at the correct level.
