Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, spark plug socket, ratchet, extension bar, dielectric grease, anti-seize compound.
  • Ensure the engine is cool before starting.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shock.
2. Remove Ignition Coils
  1. Locate the ignition coils on top of the engine.
  2. Disconnect the electrical connectors from each ignition coil by pressing the tab and pulling them off.
  3. Remove the bolts securing each ignition coil using a socket wrench.
  4. Pull the ignition coils straight out of the spark plug wells.
3. Remove Old Spark Plugs
  1. Use a spark plug socket attached to the ratchet and extension bar to carefully unscrew each spark plug, turning counterclockwise.
  2. Remove the spark plugs from the wells and inspect them for wear or damage.
4. Install New Spark Plugs
  1. Apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to the threads of each new spark plug.
  2. Check and adjust the gap on each spark plug according to manufacturer specifications if necessary.
  3. Carefully insert the new spark plugs into the wells and hand-tighten them to avoid cross-threading.
  4. Use a torque wrench to tighten the spark plugs to the manufacturer’s specified torque (typically around 13-15 ft-lbs for most Toyota engines).
5. Reinstall Ignition Coils
  1. Place the ignition coils back into their respective positions over the new spark plugs.
  2. Secure each ignition coil with the bolts and reconnect the electrical connectors.
  3. Ensure all connections are tight and secured to prevent any misfires.
6. Reconnect Battery and Test
  1. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
  2. Start the engine and let it idle to ensure smooth operation.
