Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and materials.
  • Tools Required:
    • Multimeter
    • Battery terminal cleaner or brush
    • Wrench set
    • Jumper cables or battery charger
    • Safety gloves and goggles
  • Safety Warnings:
    • Wear safety goggles and gloves when handling batteries, as they contain corrosive substances.
2. Jump-Start or Charge the Battery
  • If the battery voltage is low, attempt to jump-start the vehicle:
    1. Position a working vehicle close to the Highlander.
    2. Connect jumper cables:
      • Attach one end of the red cable to the positive terminal of the dead battery.
      • Connect the other end of the red cable to the positive terminal of the good battery.
      • Attach one end of the black cable to the negative terminal of the good battery.
      • Connect the other end of the black cable to a metal ground on the Highlander (not the negative terminal).
    3. Start the working vehicle, then attempt to start the Highlander.
  • If jump-starting is not possible or fails, use a battery charger:
    1. Connect the charger to the battery (red to positive, black to negative).
    2. Set the charger according to the manufacturer's instructions and charge the battery.
3. Clean Battery Terminals
  1. Disconnect battery cables (negative first, then positive).
  2. Use a battery terminal cleaner or brush to remove any corrosion from the terminals and cable connectors.
  3. Reconnect the battery cables (positive first, then negative) and ensure they are tight.
4. Replace Battery (if necessary)
  1. If the battery fails testing or is over three years old, consider replacing it.
  2. Disconnect the old battery (negative first).
  3. Remove the hold-down bracket and lift out the old battery.
  4. Place the new battery in the tray and secure it with the bracket.
  5. Connect the positive cable first, followed by the negative cable, ensuring a snug fit.
