Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools: multimeter, socket set, cleaning brush, terminal protector spray, and safety glasses.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked in a safe location with the engine turned off and keys removed.
2. Clean Battery Terminals
  • Remove the battery cables, starting with the negative (-) terminal, followed by the positive (+) terminal.
  • Use a wire brush to clean any corrosion from the battery terminals and cable connectors.
  • Reconnect the battery cables securely, first the positive (+) and then the negative (-).
  • Apply terminal protector spray to inhibit future corrosion.
3. Replace the Battery (if needed)
  • If the battery voltage is below 12.4 volts or testing indicates failure, replace the battery.
  • Remove the old battery by unbolting the battery hold-down clamp and lifting it out.
  • Install the new battery into the tray, ensuring it is properly seated.
  • Reconnect the battery terminals, starting with the positive (+) terminal followed by the negative (-).
  • Tighten the connections firmly, but avoid over-tightening.
4. Repair or Replace Alternator (if needed)
  • If the alternator output is below specifications, diagnose further.
  • Disconnect the battery.
  • Remove the serpentine belt from the alternator.
  • Unbolt the alternator from its mounting brackets and disconnect the electrical connectors.
  • Install the new or repaired alternator in reverse order, ensuring all connections are secure.
  • Reconnect the battery and test the charging system again.
