Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather all necessary tools and parts.
  • Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to ensure safety.
2. Inspect and Replace Spark Plugs
  1. Remove the ignition coil covers if applicable using a socket set.
  2. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the ignition coils.
  3. Remove the ignition coils using a ratchet and socket.
  4. Remove the spark plugs using a spark plug socket.
  5. Inspect the spark plugs; replace if they are worn or fouled.
    • Recommended spark plug gap for Toyota Highlander: 0.043 inches.
  6. Install new spark plugs and torque to manufacturer specifications (usually around 13-15 lb-ft).
3. Test and Replace Ignition Coils
  1. Test each ignition coil using a multimeter.
    • Primary resistance should be around 0.5 to 1.5 ohms.
    • Secondary resistance should be around 8,000 to 15,000 ohms.
  2. Replace any ignition coils that are outside of these specifications.
  3. Reinstall the ignition coils and reconnect the electrical connectors.
4. Inspect and Replace Ignition Switch (if necessary)
  1. Remove the steering column cover to access the ignition switch.
  2. Disconnect the wiring harness from the ignition switch.
  3. Remove the ignition switch mounting screws and take out the switch.
  4. Install the new ignition switch by reversing the removal steps.
  5. Reassemble the steering column cover.
