Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts, ensuring the vehicle is on a level surface.
  • Tools required: Jack, jack stands, tire iron, ratchet and socket set, ball joint separator tool, grease gun (if re-greasing), safety gloves, and safety glasses.
2. Raise and Secure Vehicle
  • Use the jack to lift the front of the Highlander.
  • Place jack stands securely under the vehicle to ensure stability before proceeding.
3. Inspect Ball Joints
  • Visually inspect the ball joints for cracks or damage.
  • Grasp the tire at the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock positions, rocking it to feel for play.
  • Repeat the rocking test at the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions.
  • If excessive movement is detected, or if the ball joint boot is damaged, replacement is necessary.
4. Replace Worn Ball Joints (if applicable)
  • Remove the wheel using the tire iron.
  • Disconnect the ball joint from the control arm using the ratchet and socket, removing any retaining clips if present.
  • Use the ball joint separator tool to detach the ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  • Install the new ball joint in reverse order, ensuring to torque all bolts to the manufacturer’s specifications (typically around 40-50 ft-lbs for ball joint bolts).
  • Reattach the wheel and lower the vehicle back to the ground.
5. Re-grease (if applicable)
  • Use a grease gun to apply grease into the new ball joint if it is serviceable.
