Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, multimeter, jumper cables, wire brush, safety gloves, safety goggles.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a flat surface, in a well-ventilated area, and the engine is off.
2. Clean Battery Terminals
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Disconnect the negative terminal (-) first, followed by the positive terminal (+).
    2. Use a wire brush to clean any corrosion from the battery terminals and cable connectors.
    3. Reconnect the positive terminal (+) first, followed by the negative terminal (-).
  • Safety Warning: Always wear safety gloves and goggles to protect against acid and debris.
3. Jump-Start the Battery
  • Sub-steps:
    1. Position a functioning vehicle close enough for the jumper cables to reach both batteries.
    2. Connect one end of the red jumper cable to the positive terminal of the dead battery and the other end to the positive terminal of the good battery.
    3. Connect one end of the black jumper cable to the negative terminal of the good battery and the other end to an unpainted metal surface on the dead vehicle (not directly to the negative terminal).
    4. Start the functioning vehicle, then attempt to start the Highlander.
  • Safety Warning: Ensure the vehicles are not touching, and avoid sparks near the battery.
4. Replace the Battery (if necessary)
  • Sub-steps:
    1. If the vehicle starts with a jump, check the voltage again. If below 12.4 volts, consider replacing the battery.
    2. Disconnect the battery as described in Step 2.
    3. Remove the battery hold-down bracket using a socket set.
    4. Lift the old battery out carefully (it can be heavy).
    5. Place the new battery in the tray, ensuring the terminals are positioned correctly.
    6. Reinstall the hold-down bracket and reconnect the terminals (positive first, then negative).
