Solution
1. Preparation
  • Ensure the vehicle is in a well-ventilated area.
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Wear safety gloves and goggles.
2. Inspect and Clean Battery Terminals
  • Disconnect the negative terminal first, then the positive terminal.
  • Clean corrosion from battery terminals using a mixture of baking soda and water, and a wire brush.
  • Rinse with clean water and dry thoroughly.
  • Reconnect the positive terminal first, followed by the negative terminal.
3. Jump-Start the Battery (if applicable)
  • Position a working vehicle close to the Highlander.
  • Connect the positive jumper cable to the positive terminal of the dead battery.
  • Connect the other end of the positive cable to the positive terminal of the working battery.
  • Connect the negative jumper cable to the negative terminal of the working battery.
  • Attach the other end of the negative cable to a metal ground point on the Highlander (not to the dead battery).
  • Start the working vehicle, then attempt to start the Highlander.
4. Battery Replacement (if necessary)
  • If the battery fails the load test or jump-starting does not work, it may need to be replaced.
  • Remove the battery hold-down clamp using a socket set.
  • Carefully lift the battery out of the tray (ensure to handle it carefully as it can be heavy).
  • Install the new battery in the reverse order of removal.
  • Secure it with the hold-down clamp and reconnect the terminals (positive first, then negative).
