Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required:
    • Jack and jack stands
    • Lug wrench
    • Socket set
    • C-clamp or brake caliper tool
    • Brake cleaner
    • Torque wrench
    • Brake grease
  • Safety Warnings:
    • Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and engage the parking brake.
    • Wear safety glasses and gloves during the procedure.
2. Lift the Vehicle
  • Use the jack to lift the front or rear of the vehicle, depending on which brake pads are being replaced.
  • Secure the vehicle on jack stands to ensure stability.
3. Remove the Wheel
  • Use the lug wrench to loosen and remove the lug nuts.
  • Take off the wheel to expose the brake assembly.
4. Remove the Brake Caliper
  • Locate the caliper mounting bolts (usually two).
  • Use the socket set to remove these bolts.
  • Carefully slide the caliper off the brake rotor. Do not let the caliper hang by the brake line; support it with a bungee cord or similar tool.
5. Remove Old Brake Pads
  • Slide the old brake pads out of the caliper bracket.
  • Inspect the caliper bracket and clean it with brake cleaner if necessary.
6. Compress the Caliper Piston
  • Use a C-clamp or brake caliper tool to gently compress the caliper piston back into the caliper housing to make room for the new pads.
  • Ensure that the brake fluid reservoir cap is removed to allow fluid to flow back.
7. Install New Brake Pads
  • Apply a thin layer of brake grease to the back of the new brake pads to reduce noise and ensure smooth operation.
  • Slide the new brake pads into place in the caliper bracket.
8. Reinstall the Caliper
  • Position the caliper over the new brake pads and align it with the bracket.
  • Reinstall and tighten the caliper mounting bolts to the manufacturer's specified torque (usually around 20-30 ft-lbs).
9. Reattach the Wheel
  • Place the wheel back onto the hub and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle and then use the torque wrench to torque the lug nuts to specification (typically 76 ft-lbs for a Corolla).
10. Final Checks
  • Refill the brake fluid if necessary and check for any leaks.
  • Replace the brake fluid reservoir cap.
