Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack, jack stands, lug wrench, socket set, torque wrench, brake cleaner, c-clamp, and a bungee cord or rope.
  • Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface, and apply the parking brake.
  • Disconnect the battery to avoid any electrical issues.
2. Lift the Vehicle
  • Loosen lug nuts slightly on the front or rear wheels (depending on which pads are being replaced).
  • Use a jack to lift the vehicle and securely place jack stands under the vehicle.
  • Remove the lug nuts and wheels.
3. Remove Brake Caliper
  • Locate the caliper bolts and remove them using a socket set.
  • Carefully lift the brake caliper away from the rotor.
  • Use a bungee cord or rope to hang the caliper from the suspension (do not let it dangle by the brake line).
4. Remove and Inspect Brake Pads
  • Slide the old brake pads out of the caliper bracket.
  • Inspect the old pads for wear; if they are less than 1/8 inch thick, they need replacement.
  • Check the caliper bracket for dirt or debris and clean it if necessary.
5. Install New Brake Pads
  • Apply a thin layer of brake grease to the back of the new brake pads to prevent noise.
  • Slide the new brake pads into the caliper bracket.
  • Ensure that they are seated properly.
6. Reinstall Brake Caliper
  • Compress the caliper piston using a c-clamp until it is flush with the caliper body.
  • Align the caliper over the new brake pads and install the caliper bolts.
  • Tighten the bolts to the manufacturer’s specified torque (usually around 25-35 ft-lbs).
7. Reassemble and Lower Vehicle
  • Reinstall the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle from the jack stands using the jack.
  • Once on the ground, tighten the lug nuts in a crisscross pattern to the manufacturer’s specified torque (typically around 76 ft-lbs).
