Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required:
    • Oil filter wrench
    • Socket set or ratchet
    • Oil drain pan
    • Funnel
    • Rags or paper towels
  • Parts Required:
    • Engine oil (5W-20 or as specified in the owner’s manual)
    • New oil filter
  • Safety Warnings:
    • Ensure the engine is cool enough to touch and avoid burning yourself.
2. Lift the Vehicle
  • Use a car jack to lift the front of the vehicle and place jack stands under the frame for safety.
  • Ensure the vehicle is stable before proceeding.
3. Drain the Old Oil
  • Place the oil drain pan under the oil pan.
  • Use a socket or ratchet to remove the oil drain plug (usually a 14mm or 15mm bolt).
  • Allow the oil to fully drain into the pan for several minutes.
4. Replace the Oil Filter
  • Use an oil filter wrench to remove the old oil filter. Be cautious as it may still contain oil.
  • Prepare the new oil filter by applying a thin layer of fresh oil on the rubber O-ring.
  • Install the new oil filter by hand, tightening it until secure (do not overtighten).
5. Reinstall the Drain Plug
  • Once the oil has drained completely, reinstall the oil drain plug and tighten it to the manufacturer's torque specification (typically around 25-30 ft-lbs).
6. Add New Oil
  • Remove the oil filler cap on top of the engine.
  • Using a funnel, pour in the new engine oil (about 4.5 quarts for the Corolla).
  • Replace the oil filler cap securely.
7. Check Oil Level
  • Start the engine and let it run for a minute, then turn it off and wait a moment.
  • Check the oil level using the dipstick and add more oil if necessary.
8. Clean Up
  • Dispose of the old oil and oil filter at a recycling center.
  • Clean any spills and ensure the work area is tidy.
