Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required:
    • Socket set
    • Multimeter
    • OBD-II scanner
    • Screwdriver set
    • Safety glasses
  • Ensure the vehicle is in a well-ventilated area and parked on a flat surface.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shock.
2. Inspect Fuse and Wiring
  • Locate the fuse box, usually found under the dashboard or in the engine compartment.
  • Remove the fuel gauge fuse using the fuse puller or needle-nose pliers.
  • Inspect the fuse for continuity. Replace if blown.
  • Inspect the wiring harness connected to the fuel sender unit and instrument cluster. Look for frayed wires or loose connections.
3. Remove Fuel Sender Unit
  • Safely relieve fuel pressure by removing the fuel pump fuse and starting the engine until it stalls.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal again.
  • Remove the rear seat or access panel to expose the fuel tank access cover.
  • Unbolt and remove the access cover to reach the fuel sender unit.
  • Carefully disconnect the wiring harness and unscrew the sender unit from the tank.
4. Inspect and Test Fuel Sender
  • Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the sender's terminals while moving the float arm through its full range.
  • Compare the readings to the manufacturer’s specifications (usually between 0 to 90 ohms).
  • If the readings are out of spec, replace the fuel sender unit.
5. Reinstallation
  • Install the new or inspected fuel sender unit back into the fuel tank.
  • Reconnect the wiring harness and secure the unit with screws.
  • Reattach the access cover and reinstall the rear seat or panel.
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
