Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface, and engage the parking brake.

Tools Required:

  • Jack and jack stands
  • Socket set
  • Torque wrench
  • Dial indicator (optional)
2. Remove Wheel
  1. Loosen the lug nuts slightly while the vehicle is on the ground.
  2. Lift the vehicle and secure it with jack stands.
  3. Fully remove the lug nuts and take off the wheel.
3. Inspect Wheel Bearings
  1. Grasp the tire at the 12 and 6 o'clock positions and check for excessive play.
  2. Rotate the wheel by hand and listen for abnormal noises.
  3. If play is detected, proceed to the next steps to replace the bearing.
4. Remove Brake Components
  1. Remove the brake caliper by unscrewing the caliper bolts (use a socket).
  2. Secure the caliper away from the rotor using a bungee cord or similar device.
  3. Remove the brake rotor by taking off the retaining screws (if applicable).
5. Remove Wheel Hub Assembly
  1. Remove the axle nut using a socket and breaker bar.
  2. Unscrew the hub mounting bolts and remove the hub assembly.
  3. Inspect the bearings visually and for smoothness by spinning them.
6. Replace Wheel Bearings (if necessary)
  1. If the bearings are worn, press out the old bearings using a bearing puller.
  2. Clean the bearing housing thoroughly.
  3. Press in the new bearings using a hydraulic press or a suitable bearing installer.
  4. Reassemble the hub assembly and torque the hub mounting bolts to the manufacturer's specifications.
7. Reassemble Brake Components and Wheel
  1. Reinstall the brake rotor and caliper, ensuring all bolts are tightened to specification.
  2. Place the wheel back on and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  3. Lower the vehicle and torque the lug nuts to the specified value.
