Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a flat surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Wear safety glasses and gloves for protection.
2. Remove Wheel
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, wheel chocks.
  • Loosen the lug nuts slightly while the wheel is still on the ground.
  • Raise the vehicle using a jack and secure with jack stands.
  • Remove the lug nuts completely and take off the wheel.
3. Remove Brake Caliper
  • Tools Required: Socket set, brake caliper tool.
  • Locate the caliper mounting bolts on the back of the caliper.
  • Use the socket set to remove the caliper mounting bolts.
  • Carefully slide the caliper off the rotor. Support the caliper using a bungee cord or a piece of wire to avoid stressing the brake line.
4. Remove Old Brake Pads
  • Tools Required: Flathead screwdriver (if necessary).
  • Slide the old brake pads out of the caliper bracket. Note the orientation for installation of new pads.
  • Inspect the caliper bracket for any debris and clean if necessary.
5. Install New Brake Pads
  • Insert the new brake pads into the caliper bracket in the same orientation as the old pads.
  • Ensure they are seated properly.
6. Reassemble Brake Caliper
  • Use a brake caliper tool to compress the caliper piston back into the caliper housing to accommodate the new, thicker brake pads.
  • Carefully slide the caliper back over the new brake pads.
  • Reinstall the caliper mounting bolts and tighten to the manufacturer's torque specifications (typically around 25-35 ft-lbs).
7. Reinstall Wheel
  • Place the wheel back onto the hub, ensuring it is aligned properly.
  • Hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle and torque the lug nuts to the manufacturer's specifications (typically around 76 ft-lbs).
8. Test Brakes
  • Before driving, pump the brake pedal several times to set the brake pads against the rotors.
  • Check the brake fluid level in the master cylinder and top off if necessary.
