Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack, jack stands, lug wrench, socket set, brake cleaner, torque wrench.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the parking brake is engaged.
  • Disconnect the battery for safety before working on the braking system.
2. Raise the Vehicle
  1. Loosen the lug nuts of the front or rear wheels (depending on which brakes are grinding).
  2. Use the jack to lift the vehicle and secure it with jack stands.
  3. Remove the lug nuts and take off the wheel.
3. Inspect and Replace Brake Pads
  1. Remove the caliper bolts using the socket set.
  2. Carefully slide the caliper off the rotor and support it with a bungee cord or similar device to avoid strain on the brake line.
  3. Remove the old brake pads from the caliper bracket.
  4. Inspect the brake pads; if they are worn down to 1/8 inch or less, replace them.
  5. Clean the caliper bracket and apply brake grease on the back of the new pads.
  6. Install the new brake pads into the caliper bracket.
4. Inspect and Replace Brake Rotors (if necessary)
  1. Check the rotor surface for grooves or scoring. If damaged, replace with new rotors.
  2. If replacing, remove the caliper bracket and then the rotor from the hub.
  3. Install new rotors, ensuring they are seated properly.
  4. Reinstall the caliper bracket and torque the bolts to the manufacturer's specifications.
5. Reassemble and Test
  1. Slide the caliper back over the new pads and rotor.
  2. Reinstall the caliper bolts and torque to specifications.
  3. Reattach the wheel and lug nuts, and lower the vehicle.
  4. Pump the brakes a few times to ensure proper pad seating before driving.
