Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, spark plug socket, ratchet, extension, dielectric grease, anti-seize compound.
  • Ensure the engine is cool before starting work.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.
2. Remove Engine Covers (if applicable)
  • Using the socket set, remove any engine cover bolts.
  • Carefully lift off the engine cover and set it aside to access the spark plugs.
3. Remove Spark Plug Wires/Coils
  • For each spark plug, disconnect the ignition coil or spark plug wire.
  • If using coils, remove the bolts securing the coils using the socket set.
  • Gently pull the coil or wire straight out, avoiding twisting or damaging it.
4. Remove Spark Plugs
  • Using the spark plug socket and ratchet, carefully unscrew and remove the old spark plugs.
  • Take caution not to drop debris into the combustion chamber.
5. Inspect and Prepare New Spark Plugs
  • Check the gap on the new spark plugs with a feeler gauge and adjust to manufacturer specifications (typically around 0.043 inches for a Camry).
  • Apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to the threads of the new spark plugs.
6. Install New Spark Plugs
  • Carefully thread each new spark plug into the cylinder head by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the torque wrench to tighten the spark plugs to the manufacturer's specified torque (typically around 13 lb-ft).
7. Reinstall Ignition Coils/Spark Plug Wires
  • If applicable, apply dielectric grease to the inside of the ignition coil boot.
  • Reinstall the ignition coils or spark plug wires by pushing them firmly into place.
  • Secure coils with their respective bolts.
8. Reinstall Engine Covers
  • Place the engine cover back on and secure it with the previously removed bolts.
9. Reconnect Battery
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
