Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, steering wheel puller, fluid catch pan, power steering fluid.
  • Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to avoid electrical shorts.
  • Allow the steering system to depressurize.
2. Remove the Steering Wheel
  • Use a steering wheel puller to remove the steering wheel carefully.
  • Disconnect any electrical connectors associated with the steering wheel (e.g., airbag connectors).
3. Disconnect the Steering Column
  • Remove the bolts securing the steering column to the dashboard.
  • Disconnect the universal joint from the steering column to the steering rack.
  • Carefully lower or move the steering column out of the way.
4. Remove the Old Steering Rack
  • Place a fluid catch pan under the steering rack to catch any leaking fluid.
  • Disconnect the power steering lines from the rack (use appropriate wrenches).
  • Remove the mounting bolts holding the steering rack to the subframe.
  • Carefully pull the old steering rack out of the vehicle.
5. Install the New Steering Rack
  • Position the new steering rack in place and secure it with mounting bolts. Torque the bolts to the manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Reconnect the power steering lines, ensuring they are secure and leak-free.
  • Reattach the steering column to the new steering rack and secure it.
6. Reassemble the Steering Wheel
  • Reconnect any electrical connectors to the steering wheel.
  • Reinstall the steering wheel and secure it with the central nut to the specified torque.
7. Final Checks
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
  • Fill the power steering reservoir with the appropriate fluid.
  • Turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to purge any air from the system.
