Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface.
  • Wear safety gloves and goggles.
  • Tools Required: Jack and jack stands, wheel chocks, socket set, torque wrench, tie rod end puller.
2. Raise the Vehicle
  • Use a jack to lift the front of the vehicle and secure it with jack stands.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels to prevent movement.
3. Remove the Wheel
  • Use a socket set to remove the lug nuts and take off the front wheel to access the tie rod end.
4. Disconnect the Tie Rod End
  • Use a tie rod end puller to separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.
  • Loosen the nut on the tie rod end using the appropriate socket size.
  • Once the nut is removed, use the puller to pop the tie rod end out of the knuckle.
5. Remove Old Tie Rod End
  • Unscrew the tie rod end from the inner tie rod using a wrench.
  • Note the position of the adjustment sleeve for alignment purposes.
6. Install New Tie Rod End
  • Screw the new tie rod end onto the inner tie rod, ensuring to replicate the original position of the adjustment sleeve.
  • Tighten the tie rod end nut to the manufacturer's specified torque value (typically around 55-65 ft-lbs).
7. Reconnect to Steering Knuckle
  • Align the new tie rod end with the steering knuckle and install it using the previously removed nut.
  • Torque the nut to the manufacturer's specification.
8. Reinstall the Wheel
  • Place the wheel back onto the hub and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle off the jack stands and use the torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque (usually 80-100 ft-lbs).
9. Alignment Check
  • It is critical to check the alignment after tie rod end replacement. Adjust as necessary or take the vehicle to a professional alignment shop.
