Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required:
    • Socket set
    • Torque wrench
    • U-joint removal tool
    • Grease gun
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a flat surface and secure it with wheel chocks.
  • Disconnect the battery to avoid any electrical issues.
2. Remove Driveshaft
  • Loosen the bolts securing the driveshaft to the differential and transmission using the socket set.
  • Carefully slide the driveshaft out while noting its orientation for reinstallation.
3. Inspect and Replace U-Joints
  • Inspection:
    • Check for any visible damage or excessive play in the U-joint.
    • Rotate the U-joint to feel for roughness or binding.
  • Replacement:
    • Use the U-joint removal tool to press out the old U-joint.
    • Clean the U-joint sockets before installing the new U-joint.
    • Press in the new U-joint ensuring it is seated properly.
4. Reassemble Driveshaft
  • Reinsert the driveshaft back into the vehicle, aligning it with the previously noted orientation.
  • Torque the bolts to the manufacturer’s specifications (usually around 30-40 ft-lbs, but verify with the service manual).
5. Grease U-Joints
  • Attach a grease gun to the zerk fitting on the new U-joint and apply grease until it begins to ooze from the seals.
  • Ensure all joints are adequately lubricated.
