Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, steering wheel puller, jack and jack stands, fluid catch pan.
  • Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to ensure safety while working on the electrical system.
2. Lift the Vehicle
  • Use a jack to lift the front of the vehicle and secure it with jack stands.
  • Remove the front wheels to gain access to the steering components.
3. Remove the Old Steering Rack
  1. Disconnect Tie Rods:

    • Use a wrench to remove the nut securing the tie rod end to the steering rack.
    • Use a steering wheel puller to detach the tie rod from the rack.
  2. Disconnect Power Steering Lines:

    • Place a fluid catch pan under the steering rack.
    • Use a wrench to disconnect the power steering lines from the rack, allowing fluid to drain into the pan.
  3. Unbolt the Steering Rack:

    • Locate the mounting bolts securing the steering rack to the subframe.
    • Use a socket set to remove these bolts.
  4. Remove the Steering Rack:

    • Carefully slide the steering rack out from its mounting, ensuring not to damage any attached components.
4. Install the New Steering Rack
  1. Position the New Rack:

    • Align the new steering rack in place where the old rack was removed.
  2. Secure the Steering Rack:

    • Reinstall the mounting bolts to secure the new steering rack to the subframe.
    • Torque the bolts to the manufacturer’s specifications (typically around 30-40 ft-lbs).
  3. Reconnect Power Steering Lines:

    • Attach the power steering lines to the new rack, ensuring they are secure and leak-free.
  4. Reconnect Tie Rods:

    • Attach the tie rod ends to the new steering rack and secure them with the nuts.
    • Use a torque wrench to tighten to the specified torque (usually around 30 ft-lbs).
5. Reassemble and Test
  • Reinstall the front wheels and lower the vehicle.
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
  • Fill the power steering reservoir with the appropriate fluid type and check for leaks.
  • Start the vehicle and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to purge air from the system.
