Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, screwdrivers, fluid catch pan, rags, power steering fluid, torque wrench.
  • Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.
2. Remove the Old Power Steering Pump
  • Drain the Power Steering Fluid: Place a fluid catch pan under the power steering pump and disconnect the return line to drain the fluid completely.
  • Disconnect Hoses: Use a wrench to disconnect the high-pressure and return hoses from the pump. Be cautious of any residual fluid.
  • Remove the Pump: Remove the mounting bolts securing the pump to the engine bracket using a socket wrench. Carefully lift the pump out of its mount and remove it from the engine bay.
3. Install the New Power Steering Pump
  • Position the New Pump: Place the new power steering pump into the mounting bracket, aligning the bolt holes.
  • Secure the Pump: Install and hand-tighten the mounting bolts initially, then use a torque wrench to tighten them to the manufacturer’s specifications (typically around 18-25 ft-lbs).
  • Reconnect Hoses: Attach the high-pressure and return hoses to the new pump, ensuring they are securely tightened to prevent leaks.
4. Refill and Bleed the System
  • Refill Power Steering Fluid: Fill the power steering reservoir with the appropriate type and amount of fluid as specified in the owner's manual.
  • Bleed the System: With the engine off, turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to remove air from the system. Check fluid levels and top off as needed.
  • Start the Engine: After bleeding, start the engine and check for any leaks around the pump and hoses. Allow the engine to idle and turn the wheel again to ensure smooth operation.
