Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface, and the engine is cool.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shock.
2. Inspect and Replace Oxygen Sensors
  • Tools Needed: O2 sensor socket, ratchet and extension, torque wrench.
  • Remove the upstream (pre-catalytic) oxygen sensor:
    1. Locate the sensor on the exhaust manifold.
    2. Use the O2 sensor socket and ratchet to loosen and remove the sensor.
  • Install the new oxygen sensor:
    1. Apply anti-seize compound to the threads of the new sensor.
    2. Hand-tighten the sensor into the exhaust manifold and then use the torque wrench to tighten to manufacturer specifications (usually around 30 ft-lbs).
3. Inspect and Replace Catalytic Converter
  • Safety Warnings: Allow the exhaust system to cool down before handling.
  • Tools Needed: Socket set, torque wrench, exhaust pipe cutter (if necessary), new gaskets.
  • Remove the catalytic converter:
    1. Unbolt the catalytic converter from the exhaust system using the socket set.
    2. If the bolts are rusted, use a penetrating oil and allow it to soak for a few minutes before attempting removal.
  • Install the new catalytic converter:
    1. Position the new catalytic converter and align it with the exhaust pipes.
    2. Install new gaskets and bolt the converter in place, tightening the bolts to manufacturer specifications.
4. Clear Error Codes
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal to restore power.
  • Use the OBD-II scanner to clear the P0420 code from the vehicle's computer.
