Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather all necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a flat surface and the engine is off.
  • Disconnect the battery to prevent any electrical issues.
2. Drain Power Steering Fluid
  • Place a drain pan under the power steering fluid reservoir.
  • Remove the fluid reservoir cap and use a turkey baster to remove as much fluid as possible.
  • Disconnect the return line from the steering rack and let the fluid drain completely.
3. Remove Steering Rack
  • Lift the vehicle using a jack and secure it with jack stands.
  • Remove the front wheels for easier access.
  • Disconnect the tie rod ends from the steering rack using a socket set.
  • Unbolt the steering rack from its mounts using a socket set.
  • Carefully slide the steering rack out from under the vehicle.
4. Inspect and Repair
  • Inspect the steering rack for cracks or damage.
  • If leaks are found at the seals, consider replacing the steering rack.
  • If the leaks are from hoses, replace the affected hoses.
  • Clean the mounting surfaces and check for wear on the mounting bushings.
5. Reinstall Steering Rack
  • Slide the new or repaired steering rack back into place.
  • Reattach the steering rack to its mounts and tighten the bolts to the manufacturer’s specifications (typically 30-40 ft-lbs).
  • Reconnect the tie rod ends and tighten to the manufacturer's torque specifications.
6. Refill Power Steering Fluid
  • Reconnect the return line to the steering rack.
  • Refill the power steering fluid reservoir with the correct type of fluid (refer to the owner’s manual).
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to bleed air from the system.
