Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack, jack stands, lug wrench, socket set, C-clamp or brake caliper tool, torque wrench, brake cleaner, and rags.
  • Park the vehicle on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the ignition.
  • Gather all necessary tools and parts before starting the replacement.
  • Safety Warning: Always wear safety gloves and goggles when working on brake components.
2. Lift the Vehicle
  • Use a jack to lift the front or rear of the Ram 1500, depending on which brake pads you are replacing.
  • Secure the vehicle with jack stands to ensure stability while working.
3. Remove Wheel
  • Use a lug wrench to loosen and remove the lug nuts from the wheel.
  • Take off the wheel and set it aside for access to the brake assembly.
4. Remove Brake Caliper
  • Locate the caliper bolts using the socket set and remove them.
  • Gently slide the caliper off the brake rotor. Do not let the caliper hang by the brake line; use a bungee cord or rope to secure it to the suspension.
5. Replace Brake Pads
  • Remove the old brake pads from the caliper bracket.
  • Take the new brake pads and apply brake grease to the backing to reduce noise.
  • Insert the new brake pads into the caliper bracket.
6. Compress Caliper Piston
  • Use a C-clamp or brake caliper tool to compress the caliper piston back into the caliper housing. Ensure the piston is fully seated to allow for new pads.
  • Carefully slide the caliper back over the new pads and rotor.
7. Reattach Caliper
  • Reinstall the caliper bolts and tighten them to the manufacturer's specifications using a torque wrench.
8. Reinstall Wheel
  • Place the wheel back onto the hub and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle and then fully tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to ensure even pressure.
9. Final Checks
  • Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the new brake pads against the rotor.
  • Inspect for any leaks around the caliper and lines.
