Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack and jack stands, socket set, U-joint puller, grease gun, torque wrench, safety goggles, gloves.
  • Raise the vehicle with the jack and secure it on jack stands. Ensure the vehicle is stable before proceeding.
2. Remove the Driveshaft
  • Disconnect the rear U-joint by removing the retaining clips or bolts.
  • Carefully slide the driveshaft out of the transmission and rear differential. Note the orientation for reinstallation.
3. Remove the U-joint
  • Place the driveshaft in a vise. Use a U-joint puller to remove the U-joint by pressing the caps out of the yoke.
  • Clean the yoke surfaces with a wire brush to ensure a proper fit for the new U-joint.
4. Install the New U-joint
  • Lubricate the new U-joint with grease.
  • Position the new U-joint in the yoke and press it in using the U-joint puller until it is fully seated.
  • Reinstall the retaining clips or bolts to secure the U-joint in place.
5. Reinstall the Driveshaft
  • Align the driveshaft according to the orientation noted earlier and slide it back into the transmission and rear differential.
  • Tighten the U-joint bolts to the manufacturer's specified torque (usually between 15-25 ft-lbs, but confirm with the service manual).
6. Final Inspection
  • Before lowering the vehicle, visually inspect all components for proper installation.
  • Recheck all fasteners and ensure they are secure.
