Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack and jack stands, socket set, torque wrench, grease gun, U-joint puller or press.
  • Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface, and engage the parking brake.
  • Disconnect the battery for safety.
2. Raise Vehicle
  • Use a jack to lift the vehicle and secure it with jack stands.
  • Ensure the vehicle is stable and secure before working underneath.
3. Remove Driveshaft
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench.
  • Remove the bolts attaching the driveshaft to the differential and transmission.
  • Carefully slide the driveshaft out of the U-joint connection.
4. Inspect and Replace U-joints
  • Check the U-joint for excessive play or signs of wear.
  • If replacement is necessary:
    1. Use a U-joint puller or press to remove the old U-joint from the driveshaft.
    2. Clean the driveshaft ends where the U-joint sits.
    3. Insert the new U-joint into the driveshaft, ensuring it is seated correctly.
    4. Use a press to secure the U-joint in place if necessary.
5. Reinstall Driveshaft
  • Reconnect the driveshaft to the differential and transmission.
  • Torque the bolts to the manufacturer’s specifications (usually around 30-40 ft-lbs, but verify with the service manual).
6. Lubrication
  • Use a grease gun to lubricate the new U-joint if applicable.
  • Ensure the grease is visible at the U-joint seals.
7. Lower Vehicle
  • Carefully remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle back to the ground.
