Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools: socket set, fluid catch container, funnel, and shop towels.
  • Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and the engine is off.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal for safety.
2. Drain Old Power Steering Fluid
  • Position the fluid catch container under the power steering pump.
  • Locate the return line (usually a smaller diameter hose) connected to the power steering reservoir.
  • Disconnect the return line and allow the old fluid to drain completely into the container.
3. Flush the Power Steering System
  • Reconnect the return line temporarily (without securing it) and fill the reservoir with new power steering fluid.
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock for a few cycles to flush out any remaining old fluid.
  • Turn off the engine and disconnect the return line again to drain the new fluid that has mixed with the old fluid.
4. Replace with New Power Steering Fluid
  • Reconnect the return line securely.
  • Fill the power steering reservoir with the manufacturer-recommended type of power steering fluid (consult the owner’s manual for specifications).
  • Check the fluid level and ensure it is at the proper mark.
5. Final Checks
  • Start the engine again and cycle the steering wheel from lock to lock multiple times to remove any air from the system.
  • Inspect for any leaks around the hoses and connections.
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
