Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is cool.
2. Inspect and Replace the Gas Cap
  • Remove the gas cap and inspect the rubber seal for damage.
  • If damaged, replace the gas cap with a new OEM or equivalent part.
  • Reinstall the gas cap and ensure it clicks firmly into place.
3. Repair EVAP System Leaks
  • If leaks are found during the smoke test:
    • Hoses and Connections: Replace any damaged hoses or clamps.
    • Charcoal Canister: If the canister is damaged, remove it by unbolting it from its bracket and disconnecting the hoses. Install a new canister in reverse order.
4. Test and Replace EVAP Valves
  • If the purge or vent valves are not functioning:
    • Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the valve from its mounting.
    • Test the valve with a multimeter; if it fails to show continuity, replace the valve with a new one.
    • Reinstall the new valve and reconnect the electrical connector.
5. Clear Codes and Recheck
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
  • Use the OBD-II scanner to clear the P0456 code and any other stored codes.
  • Start the engine and allow it to run for a few minutes to ensure the check engine light does not reappear.
