Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Multimeter, battery tester, socket set, wire brush, safety gloves, safety goggles
  • Ensure the vehicle is turned off and parked on a flat surface.
  • Wear safety gloves and goggles to protect against battery acid.
2. Clean Battery Terminals
  • Disconnect the negative (-) terminal first, followed by the positive (+) terminal.
  • Use a wire brush to clean any corrosion from the battery terminals and connectors.
  • Reconnect the positive (+) terminal first, then the negative (-) terminal.
3. Test Battery Voltage
  • Set the multimeter to DC voltage.
  • Connect the red probe to the positive (+) terminal and the black probe to the negative (-) terminal.
  • Record the voltage reading. If the reading is below 12.4 volts, the battery may need charging or replacement.
4. Conduct Load Test
  • Connect the battery tester to the battery following its instructions.
  • Apply a load (usually around half the CCA rating) for 10-15 seconds and observe the voltage drop.
  • If the voltage drops below 9.6 volts during the test, the battery is likely weak and should be replaced.
5. Check for Parasitic Draws
  • Turn off all electrical accessories and ensure the vehicle is off.
  • Disconnect the negative terminal and connect the multimeter in series between the negative terminal and the battery post.
  • Record the current draw; it should be below 50 mA. If it’s higher, investigate further for parasitic draws.
