Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is turned off.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical issues.
2. Check and Replace Power Steering Fluid
  • Tools Required: Funnel, fluid container, gloves.
  • Remove the power steering reservoir cap.
  • Check fluid level; if low, add manufacturer-recommended power steering fluid.
  • If fluid is dark or contaminated, drain the old fluid by removing the return line from the pump, and allow it to empty into a container.
  • Refill with new power steering fluid, and reattach the reservoir cap.
3. Inspect and Replace Power Steering Pump
  • Tools Required: Socket set, wrench, torque wrench, fluid container.
  • Remove the serpentine belt by loosening the tensioner.
  • Disconnect the hoses from the power steering pump.
  • Remove the mounting bolts and carefully remove the pump from the vehicle.
  • Install the new pump by reversing the removal process, ensuring all connections are secure.
  • Torque the mounting bolts to manufacturer specifications.
4. Inspect and Replace Steering Rack
  • Tools Required: Jack, jack stands, socket set, torque wrench, lubricant.
  • Lift the vehicle and remove the front wheels for better access.
  • Disconnect the steering linkage from the rack.
  • Remove the mounting bolts securing the rack to the subframe.
  • Carefully pull the steering rack out and replace it with a new unit.
  • Reattach all components and torque to specifications.
5. Final Assembly
  • Reinstall the front wheels.
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to bleed air from the system.
