Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Transmission fluid funnel, rags, OBD-II scanner, jack and jack stands (if needed).
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is turned off.
  • Allow the engine to cool if it has been running.
2. Check Fluid Level
  • Start the engine and let it idle until it reaches normal operating temperature.
  • With your foot on the brake, shift through all gears and return to Park.
  • Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert, and then remove it again to check the fluid level. Add fluid if necessary.
3. Inspect Fluid Condition
  • Take a small sample of the fluid on a clean white cloth.
  • If the fluid is dark brown or smells burnt, it is time for a change.
4. Change Transmission Fluid
  1. Drain Old Fluid:

    • Locate the transmission drain plug under the vehicle.
    • Place a drain pan underneath and remove the drain plug to let the old fluid drain completely.
    • Reinstall the drain plug with the correct torque specification.
  2. Replace Fluid Filter (if applicable):

    • If your Civic has a transmission filter, remove the old filter and install a new one. Ensure all seals are replaced to prevent leaks.
  3. Add New Fluid:

    • Use a funnel to add the recommended type of transmission fluid (check owner’s manual for specifications) through the dipstick tube.
    • Start with the amount specified in the manual, usually around 3-4 quarts, and check the level as you add.
  4. Check for Leaks:

    • Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Inspect for leaks around the drain plug and filter.
5. Final Check
  • After adding fluid, perform another check of the fluid level and condition.
  • Drive the vehicle for a short distance to ensure proper operation and recheck fluid level.
