Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Needed: Floor jack, jack stands, socket set, wrench set, oxygen sensor socket, torque wrench, penetrating oil.
  • Safety Warnings: Disconnect the battery before starting work. Allow the exhaust system to cool completely to avoid burns.
2. Lift the Vehicle
  • Use a floor jack to raise the front of the vehicle.
  • Secure the vehicle with jack stands to ensure stability.
3. Remove the Oxygen Sensors
  • Use an oxygen sensor socket to remove the upstream (pre-catalytic) and downstream (post-catalytic) oxygen sensors.
  • Set the sensors aside for reinstallation.
4. Remove the Catalytic Converter
  • Locate the bolts securing the catalytic converter to the exhaust manifold and the exhaust pipe.
  • Apply penetrating oil to the bolts if they are rusted or difficult to remove.
  • Use the socket set to remove the bolts and detach the catalytic converter from both ends.
  • Carefully remove the catalytic converter from the exhaust system.
5. Install the New Catalytic Converter
  • Position the new catalytic converter in place, aligning it with the exhaust manifold and exhaust pipe.
  • Hand-tighten the bolts to hold it in place, then use a torque wrench to tighten the bolts to the manufacturer’s specified torque values (typically around 30-40 lb-ft, but refer to a service manual for exact specifications).
6. Reinstall the Oxygen Sensors
  • Reinstall the upstream and downstream oxygen sensors into the new catalytic converter using the oxygen sensor socket. Tighten them to the specified torque (usually around 20-25 lb-ft).
7. Lower the Vehicle and Test
  • Remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle using the floor jack.
  • Reconnect the battery.
  • Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes to check for leaks or unusual noises.
