Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and parts required for the repair.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface with the engine off and cool.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent any electrical issues.
2. Locate the Source of the Leak
  • Tools Required: UV dye, UV light (if applicable).
  • Use UV dye in the power steering fluid to identify the leak source.
  • Shine the UV light around hoses, fittings, and the power steering pump to locate the leak.
3. Replace Leaking Components

A. Power Steering Hoses

  • Tools Required: Socket set, wrench set, fluid catch basin.
  • Remove the clamps securing the leaking hose(s).
  • Disconnect the hose from the power steering pump and steering rack.
  • Install the new hose(s) and secure with clamps. Ensure there are no kinks.

B. Power Steering Pump (if leaking)

  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, power steering fluid.
  • Disconnect the power steering lines from the pump.
  • Remove the mounting bolts and remove the pump from its bracket.
  • Install the new pump and torque the bolts to manufacturer specifications.
  • Reconnect the power steering lines securely.

C. Steering Rack (if leaking)

  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, power steering fluid.
  • Disconnect the steering column from the rack.
  • Remove the mounting bolts and disconnect the power steering lines.
  • Replace the rack with a new one, ensuring all seals are properly placed.
  • Reconnect the steering column and torque bolts to specifications.
4. Refill and Bleed the System
  • Tools Required: Funnel, power steering fluid.
  • Refill the power steering reservoir with manufacturer-recommended fluid.
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times while checking for leaks.
  • Monitor fluid level, adding more as necessary.
