Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather all necessary tools and parts.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and set the parking brake.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical issues.
2. Remove the Steering Rack
  • Tools Required: Socket set, wrench set, jack and jack stands, torque wrench.
  • Lift the front of the vehicle and secure it on jack stands.
  • Remove the front wheels for easier access.
  • Disconnect the steering column from the steering rack by removing any bolts or nuts.
  • Detach the power steering lines from the steering rack; expect some fluid spillage, so have a container ready.
  • Unscrew the mounting bolts of the steering rack and carefully slide it out of the vehicle.
3. Inspect and Repair or Replace
  • Tools Required: Torque wrench, seal puller, replacement seals or steering rack.
  • Check the steering rack for damaged seals or worn components.
  • If only seals are worn, replace them with new seals. Use a seal puller to remove old seals and install new ones.
  • If the rack is severely damaged, replace it with a new or rebuilt steering rack.
4. Reinstall the Steering Rack
  • Slide the repaired or new steering rack back into position.
  • Reattach the mounting bolts, tightening them to the manufacturer's specified torque values.
  • Reconnect the power steering lines and steering column.
  • Reinstall the front wheels.
5. Refill Power Steering Fluid
  • Tools Required: Funnel.
  • Fill the power steering reservoir with the appropriate fluid type specified in the owner’s manual.
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to purge air from the system.
