Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather Tools and Parts:
    • Tools: Socket set, torque wrench, jack and jack stands, spring compressor (if necessary), pry bar, and ratcheting wrenches.
    • Parts: New shocks or struts, new mounting hardware, and potentially new strut bearings or bushings.
2. Raise the Vehicle
  • Step 1: Park the vehicle on a flat surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Step 2: Loosen the lug nuts on the wheels where shocks or struts will be replaced.
  • Step 3: Use a jack to lift the vehicle and secure it with jack stands.
  • Step 4: Remove the wheels.
3. Remove Old Shocks or Struts
  • Step 1: Locate the upper mounting bolts for the shocks or struts and remove them using a socket.
  • Step 2: Remove the lower mounting bolts using a socket or wrench.
  • Step 3: If replacing struts, use a spring compressor to safely compress the spring before removing the strut assembly.
  • Step 4: Carefully detach the strut or shock from the vehicle.
4. Install New Shocks or Struts
  • Step 1: If applicable, install the new strut mounting hardware or bearings onto the new strut.
  • Step 2: Position the new shock or strut into place and attach the lower mounting bolts first; torque to manufacturer's specifications.
  • Step 3: Raise the upper part of the strut or shock and secure it with the upper mounting bolts; torque to manufacturer's specifications.
5. Reassemble and Lower Vehicle
  • Step 1: Reinstall the wheels and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Step 2: Lower the vehicle from the jack stands and remove the jack.
  • Step 3: Tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque.
