Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack and jack stands, socket set, wrench set, ball joint separator tool, torque wrench, grease gun, safety glasses.
  • Safety Warnings:
    • Always wear safety glasses when working under the vehicle.
    • Ensure the vehicle is securely lifted and supported on jack stands before beginning work.
2. Remove Wheel and Brake Components
  1. Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheel using a socket wrench.
  2. Raise the vehicle with a jack and secure it with jack stands.
  3. Remove the wheel completely.
  4. Remove the brake caliper by unbolting it from the bracket and securing it out of the way, ensuring not to stress the brake line.
  5. Remove the brake rotor if necessary for easier access to the ball joint.
3. Remove the Old Ball Joint
  1. Locate the ball joint at the lower control arm.
  2. Remove the nut securing the ball joint to the steering knuckle using a socket.
  3. Use a ball joint separator tool to disconnect the ball joint from the steering knuckle. Ensure to do this carefully to avoid damaging surrounding components.
  4. Unbolt the ball joint from the control arm and remove it completely.
4. Install the New Ball Joint
  1. Position the new ball joint in the control arm, aligning it with the mounting holes.
  2. Secure the ball joint to the control arm using the manufacturer-specified bolts and torque them to the correct specifications.
  3. Reconnect the ball joint to the steering knuckle and tighten the retaining nut to the specified torque.
5. Reassemble and Test
  1. Reinstall the brake rotor and caliper.
  2. Reattach the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  3. Lower the vehicle back to the ground and torque the lug nuts to the manufacturer’s specifications.
  4. Perform a wheel alignment to ensure proper handling and tire wear.
