Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather necessary tools and parts.
  • Park the vehicle on a level surface and ensure the engine is off and cool.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical issues.
2. Remove the Steering Rack
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, jack and jack stands.
  • Raise the vehicle using the jack and secure it with jack stands.
  • Remove the front wheels for better access to the steering components.
  • Disconnect the steering shaft from the rack by removing the retaining bolt.
  • Detach the hydraulic lines from the steering rack. Use a catch pan to collect any leaking fluid.
  • Unscrew the mounting bolts securing the steering rack to the subframe, then remove the rack from the vehicle.
3. Inspect and Replace Seals
  • Examine the steering rack for worn or damaged seals. If seals are damaged:
    • Carefully remove the old seals using a seal puller or flathead screwdriver.
    • Clean the sealing surfaces with a lint-free cloth.
    • Apply a thin layer of power steering fluid to the new seals before installation.
    • Install the new seals, ensuring they are seated correctly.
4. Reinstall the Steering Rack
  • Position the steering rack back into place and secure it with the mounting bolts. Torque the bolts to the manufacturer’s specification (typically around 33-44 lb-ft, but refer to service manual).
  • Reattach the hydraulic lines and ensure they are tight.
  • Reconnect the steering shaft to the rack and secure it with the retaining bolt.
5. Refill Power Steering Fluid
  • Tools Required: Funnel.
  • Fill the power steering reservoir with the appropriate fluid type (usually Honda PS fluid).
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to bleed the system of air.
  • Check for leaks at the steering rack and connections.
6. Final Check
  • Reinstall the front wheels and lower the vehicle.
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
  • Test the steering system for proper function and check fluid levels again.
