Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather Tools and Parts
    • Tools: Socket set, torque wrench, flathead screwdriver, ratchet, timing belt tool kit, engine support bar (if necessary)
    • Parts: New timing belt, timing belt tensioner, idler pulley, water pump (optional but recommended), and new seals/gaskets.
2. Remove Components
  • Disconnect the Battery

    • Disconnect negative terminal to ensure safety.
  • Remove Engine Covers

    • Use a socket to remove the upper and lower engine covers.
  • Remove Accessory Belts

    • Loosen the tensioners and take off the accessory belts (alternator, power steering, etc.).
  • Remove Crankshaft Pulley

    • Use a socket to remove the crankshaft pulley bolt (may require a holder tool to prevent rotation).
3. Timing Belt Removal
  • Align Timing Marks

    • Rotate the engine to TDC (top dead center) and align timing marks on the crankshaft and camshaft pulleys.
  • Loosen Timing Belt Tensioner

    • Use the appropriate tool to release tension from the timing belt.
  • Remove Timing Belt

    • Carefully slide the timing belt off the camshaft and crankshaft pulleys.
4. Install New Timing Belt
  • Install New Timing Belt

    • Place the new timing belt around the crankshaft and camshaft pulleys, ensuring it is aligned with the timing marks.
  • Reapply Tension

    • Reinstall the tensioner and ensure the belt has the correct tension. Rotate the engine to check alignment.
5. Reassemble Components
  • Reinstall Crankshaft Pulley

    • Tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt to manufacturer specifications (typically around 130 ft-lbs).
  • Reattach Accessory Belts

    • Install and adjust the tension on the accessory belts.
  • Reinstall Engine Covers

    • Place the upper and lower engine covers back in position and secure them.
6. Final Checks
  • Reconnect Battery
    • Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
