Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required:
    • Jack and jack stands
    • Socket set
    • Wrench set
    • O2 sensor socket
    • Torque wrench
    • Exhaust gasket sealant
  • Raise the vehicle using a jack and secure it on jack stands.
  • Disconnect the battery by removing the negative terminal.
2. Remove Exhaust Components
  1. Locate the Catalytic Converter: Identify the position of the catalytic converter in the exhaust system.
  2. Remove O2 Sensors:
    • Use an O2 sensor socket to carefully unscrew any upstream and downstream oxygen sensors connected to the catalytic converter.
  3. Unbolt the Catalytic Converter:
    • Using a socket and wrench set, loosen and remove the bolts securing the catalytic converter to the exhaust pipe and the exhaust manifold.
    • If rusted, apply penetrating oil and allow it to sit before attempting removal.
  4. Carefully Remove the Catalytic Converter:
    • Once unbolted, carefully lower and remove the catalytic converter from the exhaust system.
3. Install New Catalytic Converter
  1. Position New Converter:
    • Place the new catalytic converter into position, aligning it with the exhaust manifold and the mid-pipe.
  2. Secure the Converter:
    • Reinstall bolts and tighten them to the manufacturer’s specified torque (typically around 30-40 lb-ft, but verify with service manual).
  3. Install O2 Sensors:
    • Reinstall the upstream and downstream oxygen sensors into the new catalytic converter, ensuring they are properly tightened.
4. Final Assembly
  1. Recheck Connections: Ensure all connections are secure and that there are no visible leaks.
  2. Reconnect Battery: Reattach the negative battery terminal.
  3. Clear Error Codes: Use the OBD-II scanner to clear any error codes from the vehicle’s computer.
