Solution
1. Preparation
  • Gather tools and parts needed for the inspection and potential repair.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a flat surface and secure it with wheel chocks.
  • Raise the vehicle using a jack and secure it with jack stands.
2. Inspect U-Joint
  • Tools Required: Flashlight, socket set, pry bar
  • Remove any protective covers or shields around the drive shaft.
  • Use a flashlight to check the U-joint for visible signs of wear, such as rust, cracks, or broken seals.
  • With a pry bar, attempt to move the U-joint to check for excessive play.
3. Test U-Joint Movement
  • Tools Required: None
  • Grasp the driveshaft at the U-joint and try to wiggle it. There should be minimal movement.
  • If there is excessive movement, it indicates a failing U-joint.
4. Replace U-Joint (if needed)
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, grease gun
  • If the U-joint is found to be faulty, remove the driveshaft by unbolting it from the differential and transmission.
  • Press out the old U-joint using a U-joint press or a suitable tool.
  • Install the new U-joint by pressing it into place and reassemble the driveshaft.
  • Torque the bolts to the manufacturer's specifications.
