Solution
1. Preparation
  • Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
  • Gather tools and parts required for the repair.
  • Disconnect the battery to ensure safety.
2. Remove the Steering Rack
  • Raise the front of the vehicle using a jack and secure it with jack stands.
  • Remove the front wheels for better access to the steering components.
  • Detach the tie rod ends from the steering rack:
    1. Use a wrench to loosen the nut on the tie rod end.
    2. Use a tie rod puller to separate the tie rod from the steering knuckle.
  • Disconnect the power steering lines from the steering rack:
    1. Use a line wrench to carefully unscrew the high-pressure and return lines.
    2. Be prepared for some fluid spillage; use a drain pan.
  • Remove any mounting bolts securing the steering rack to the subframe using a socket set.
  • Carefully slide the steering rack out from its position.
3. Inspect and Replace Seals
  • Clean the steering rack and inspect for any wear or damage.
  • If the seals are damaged, replace them with new ones:
    1. Remove old seals carefully with a pick tool.
    2. Install new seals, ensuring they are seated correctly.
  • Reinstall the steering rack in reverse order of removal.
4. Refill and Bleed the Power Steering System
  • Reconnect the power steering lines to the steering rack:
    1. Use a torque wrench to tighten the lines according to manufacturer specifications.
  • Fill the power steering reservoir with the recommended fluid type.
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock multiple times to purge air from the system.
  • Check the fluid level and top off as necessary.
