Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, coolant recovery tank, engine oil, new oil filter, head gasket kit.
  • Ensure the engine is cool. Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent any electrical issues.
2. Drain Fluids
  • Remove the oil drain plug and allow the contaminated oil to drain completely into a suitable container.
  • Drain the coolant from the radiator and engine block by removing the lower radiator hose and engine block drain plugs.
3. Remove Components
  • Air Intake: Remove the air intake assembly for better access.
  • Exhaust Manifold: Unbolt and disconnect the exhaust manifold from the cylinder head.
  • Cylinder Head: Remove the valve cover, followed by the cylinder head bolts in the proper sequence. Carefully lift the cylinder head off the engine block.
4. Inspect and Clean
  • Inspect the cylinder head and engine block for warpage or cracks using a straightedge. If warped, the head may need machining.
  • Clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and engine block thoroughly to remove old gasket material.
5. Install New Head Gasket
  • Place the new head gasket onto the engine block, ensuring proper alignment.
  • Reinstall the cylinder head, following the manufacturer’s specified torque sequence and torque values for the head bolts.
6. Reassemble and Refill Fluids
  • Reattach the exhaust manifold and air intake assembly.
  • Replace the oil filter and refill the engine with fresh oil.
  • Refill the cooling system with new coolant and bleed any air from the system.
