Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack, jack stands, lug wrench, socket set, brake cleaner, C-clamp or brake caliper tool, torque wrench.
  • Park the vehicle on a level surface and set the parking brake.
  • Gather tools and parts for the replacement.
2. Raise the Vehicle
  1. Loosen the lug nuts on the front or rear wheel (depending on which brake pads are being replaced) slightly while the vehicle is on the ground.
  2. Use a jack to lift the vehicle and securely place it on jack stands.
  3. Remove the lug nuts completely and take off the wheel to access the brake components.
3. Remove the Brake Caliper
  1. Use a socket wrench to remove the bolts securing the brake caliper to the bracket.
  2. Carefully slide the caliper off the brake rotor.
  3. Support the caliper using a bungee cord or rope to prevent hanging from the brake line.
4. Remove Old Brake Pads
  1. Remove the old brake pads from the caliper bracket.
  2. Inspect the caliper and bracket for any signs of wear or damage.
5. Compress the Caliper Piston
  1. Use a C-clamp or brake caliper tool to gently compress the caliper piston back into the caliper housing. This will make room for the new, thicker brake pads.
  2. Ensure the brake fluid reservoir is monitored to prevent overflow.
6. Install New Brake Pads
  1. Apply a thin layer of brake grease to the backing of the new brake pads to prevent noise.
  2. Insert the new brake pads into the caliper bracket in the same position as the old ones.
7. Reattach the Brake Caliper
  1. Slide the caliper back over the new brake pads and rotor.
  2. Secure the caliper by tightening the caliper bolts to the manufacturer’s specified torque (typically around 20-25 lb-ft).
8. Reinstall the Wheel
  1. Place the wheel back onto the hub and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  2. Lower the vehicle from the jack stands.
  3. Once the vehicle is on the ground, use a torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts to the manufacturer’s specified torque (usually around 140 lb-ft).
9. Final Checks
  1. Pump the brake pedal a few times to ensure the brake pads are seated correctly.
  2. Check the brake fluid level and add if necessary.
