Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Socket set, torque wrench, power steering fluid, fluid catch pan, steering gear puller, and safety gloves.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.
  • Raise the vehicle using a jack and support it securely on jack stands.
2. Remove the Steering Gear
  1. Remove the Power Steering Fluid:

    • Place a fluid catch pan under the steering gear.
    • Disconnect the power steering return line and allow fluid to drain completely.
  2. Detach the Steering Column:

    • Remove the bolts securing the steering column to the firewall and the intermediate shaft.
    • Disconnect any electrical connectors from the steering column.
  3. Unbolt the Steering Gear:

    • Remove the bolts securing the steering gear to the frame using a socket set.
    • Carefully pull the steering gear away from the mounting points.
  4. Remove the Pitman Arm:

    • Use a steering gear puller to remove the pitman arm from the steering gear.
    • This may require additional force; ensure the puller is properly aligned.
3. Install the New Steering Gear
  1. Position the New Steering Gear:

    • Align the new steering gear in place and secure it to the frame using the original bolts.
    • Torque the bolts to the manufacturer's specifications (usually around 45-55 ft-lbs).
  2. Attach the Pitman Arm:

    • Reinstall the pitman arm onto the new steering gear and ensure it is properly seated.
    • Torque the pitman arm nut to manufacturer's specifications (typically around 35-45 ft-lbs).
  3. Reconnect the Steering Column:

    • Reattach the steering column to the intermediate shaft and secure it to the firewall.
    • Reconnect any electrical connectors removed earlier.
  4. Reattach Power Steering Lines:

    • Connect the power steering return line to the new steering gear.
    • Ensure all connections are tight to prevent leaks.
4. Refill Power Steering Fluid
  • Fill the power steering reservoir with the recommended fluid type until it reaches the appropriate level.
  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock to purge air from the system.
  • Check fluid level again and top off as necessary.
