Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack, jack stands, lug wrench, socket set, torque wrench, C-clamp, brake cleaner, and safety goggles.
  • Ensure vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is off.
  • Wear safety goggles and gloves.
2. Lift the Vehicle
  • Loosen the lug nuts on the front or rear wheel where brake pads will be replaced.
  • Use a jack to lift the vehicle and secure it with jack stands.
  • Remove the wheel by fully unscrewing the lug nuts.
3. Remove Brake Caliper
  • Locate the caliper bolts (usually two) on the back of the caliper.
  • Use the socket set to remove these bolts and carefully slide the caliper off the brake rotor.
  • Support the caliper using a bungee cord or similar to avoid stressing the brake line.
4. Remove Old Brake Pads
  • Inspect the old brake pads and note their orientation.
  • Slide the pads out of their mounting brackets. If necessary, use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry them loose.
  • Take note of the wear indicators, if any, for proper placement of new pads.
5. Compress the Caliper Piston
  • Use a C-clamp to compress the caliper piston back into the caliper housing. This creates space for the new, thicker brake pads.
  • Ensure the piston is fully retracted and check the condition of the piston seal.
6. Install New Brake Pads
  • Apply a thin layer of brake grease on the back of the new pads to prevent noise.
  • Position the new pads into the caliper brackets in the same orientation as the old ones.
  • Ensure the wear indicators are properly aligned.
7. Reattach the Caliper
  • Carefully slide the caliper back over the new pads.
  • Reinsert and tighten the caliper bolts to the manufacturer's torque specifications (usually around 25-30 ft-lbs, verify with service manual).
8. Reassemble Wheel and Lower Vehicle
  • Replace the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Lower the vehicle using the jack and remove the jack stands.
  • Fully tighten the lug nuts in a crisscross pattern to the recommended torque (typically 80-100 ft-lbs).
