Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack and jack stands, socket set, torque wrench, fluid catch pan, power steering fluid, rags.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a flat surface and the engine is turned off.
  • Allow the engine to cool if it has been running.
  • Disconnect the battery to prevent any electrical issues.
2. Remove the Rack and Pinion
  1. Lift the Vehicle:
    • Use a jack to raise the front of the vehicle and secure it with jack stands.
  2. Disconnect the Steering Column:
    • Remove the bolt securing the steering shaft to the rack and pinion using a socket.
  3. Remove the Tie Rods:
    • Use a tie rod puller to disconnect the tie rods from the steering knuckles.
  4. Disconnect Power Steering Hoses:
    • Place a fluid catch pan under the rack and pinion assembly and disconnect the power steering lines using a wrench.
  5. Unbolt the Rack and Pinion:
    • Remove the bolts securing the rack to the subframe using a socket.
  6. Take Out the Rack and Pinion:
    • Carefully slide the rack and pinion out from the vehicle.
3. Inspect and Replace Seals
  1. Inspect the Rack:
    • Examine the rack and pinion for wear and damage. If the seals are worn or damaged, proceed to replace them.
  2. Replace Seals:
    • Remove old seals and install new ones, ensuring they are seated properly.
4. Install the New or Repaired Rack and Pinion
  1. Position the Rack:
    • Slide the new or repaired rack and pinion into place in the vehicle.
  2. Secure the Rack:
    • Bolt the rack and pinion back to the subframe using specified torque values (consult the service manual for exact torque specs).
  3. Reconnect Power Steering Hoses:
    • Reattach the power steering lines and ensure they are tight to prevent leaks.
  4. Reconnect Tie Rods:
    • Attach the tie rods back to the steering knuckles and tighten to manufacturer specifications.
  5. Reattach Steering Column:
    • Secure the steering column to the rack and pinion assembly.
5. Refill Power Steering Fluid
  • Fill the power steering fluid reservoir with the appropriate fluid type (consult the owner's manual) and check for leaks.
