Solution
1. Preparation
  • Tools Required: Jack and jack stands, lug wrench, pry bar, socket set, torque wrench, safety glasses.
  • Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface and the engine is off. Engage the parking brake.
2. Lift the Vehicle
  • Use the jack to lift the front of the vehicle and secure it on jack stands.
  • Remove the front wheels using the lug wrench.
3. Inspect and Test Ball Joints
  • Visual Inspection: Look for any damage or wear on the ball joints and control arms.
  • Play Test:
    • Grasp the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock and rock it. If excessive movement is felt, it indicates a worn ball joint.
    • Use a pry bar under the control arm. If you see movement at the ball joint, replace it.
4. Replace Worn Ball Joints (if applicable)
  • Remove Old Ball Joint:
    • Remove the cotter pin and nut securing the ball joint to the steering knuckle.
    • Use a ball joint separator tool to detach the joint from the knuckle.
  • Install New Ball Joint:
    • Insert the new ball joint into the control arm and secure it with the provided nut. Torque to manufacturer specifications (generally around 35-50 lb-ft).
    • Reattach the steering knuckle using the original nut and cotter pin.
  • Reassemble: Reinstall the wheel and lower the vehicle.
